I typically struggle to fall asleep.
Actually, that’s an understatement. I don’t just count sheep — I negotiate with them.
Over the years, I’ve tried and tested dozens of supplements and sleep hacks. From sticking my head in the freezer (bad idea) to an hour of cardio in the morning (actually helpful), I’ve experimented with it all.
So, when Ed and Chris offered to send me a pack of their Slumber Patches to try out, I was curious. This little patch packed with melatonin, valerian root, and a few other sleepy-time champions, boldly claims to send you off to dreamland without making you groggy in the morning.
I tried it for three weeks — and I was pretty happy with the results. I’ve put together this frank review for people who are considering trying the patch out for themselves.
Firstly, a little disclaimer. Because I work for SnoreLessNow, I may be biased, but I promise to be as honest as possible. (I don’t need the gods of sleep to punish me over this.) Still, I invite you to take my opinion with a pinch of salt, remembering that what works for one person might not work for the next. After all, each person is unique.
Right, let’s get into it!
In an era where the quest for a good night's sleep has led many down the path of pills and potions, the Slumber Patch aims to stick (literally) to a more natural approach.
Imagine a small plaster that releases a cocktail of nature’s best sleep aids directly into your skin. That's the Slumber Patch in a nutshell — a discreet, stick-on patch that aims to transform your tumultuous nights into peaceful slumbers.
The Slumber Patch uses what's dubbed "Overnight Continuous Release Technology" to gradually dispense a blend of sleep-promoting ingredients directly through your skin and into your bloodstream. The idea? To help you naturally wind down before bedtime.
Here are the key ingredients:
Melatonin: Your body naturally produces this “sleep hormone” at night. It regulates your sleep-wake cycle.
Valerian Root: This plant is the heavyweight champion of herbal sleep aids, known for increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain and calming nervous activity.
Hops Flower Extract: Not just for brewing beer, hops have a sedative effect that can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep.
5-HTP: A precursor to serotonin, this compound has a hand in regulating mood and sleep patterns.
Magnesium: This mineral helps deactivate adrenaline and relax muscles, setting the stage for calm and restfulness.
L-Tryptophan: Tryptophan is involved in creating serotonin, which the body can convert into melatonin.
I’ve tried supplements like melatonin, 5-HTP, and valerian root before — but I’d never used them all at the same time, nor had I used them in the form of a patch.
Here's my account of my experience using the slumber patch over a three-week period.
Starting on Monday evening, I applied the Slumber Patch straight after my shower, about an hour before my intended bedtime.
The Slumber Patch smells faintly like lavender — not too strong. I chose to stick it on my lower back, although you can really put the patch anywhere. It managed to stay on my back all night without falling off or irritating my (sensitive, eczema-prone) skin.
I noticed a positive difference in my sleep from the very first night. When I take melatonin capsules, I usually feel groggy and confused before falling asleep, especially if I don’t go to bed immediately after taking it.
I didn’t have this experience with the Slumber Patch. Instead, I felt sleepy and calm — enough to get into bed and lie there for a few minutes without overthinking or feeling anxious about the next day. I fell asleep fairly quickly and only woke up once during the night — at 3am to feed my cat. (Pity I can’t give my cat a Slumber Patch.)
When I woke up the next morning, I felt okay: not groggy, but also not super energized or well-rested, which might just be because I hadn’t had a good night’s rest in a long time.
Over the next few nights, I continued to use the Slumber Patch. I slept extremely well and woke up feeling decent.
By the end of the week, I got into a good sleeping pattern. I took my Slumber Patch around the same time every night, which meant I fell asleep around the same time every night. I couldn’t engage in my usual habit of late-night doomscrolling and revenge bedtime procrastination — I was simply too tired to do so.
I also noticed something else: On Sunday morning, I felt slightly more energized than I usually do despite waking up at my usual time.
Something nobody tells you about insomnia is that bedtime can be an anxiety-inducing affair. Before bed, you might be worrying about how badly you’ll sleep and how exhausted you’ll be the next day. (Of course, this anxiety only makes it much harder to sleep — a vicious cycle.)
During week 2 of using the Slumber Patch, I noticed that it helped me feel calmer before bedtime. Maybe this was a placebo effect, or maybe it’s the fact that some of the key ingredients — like valerian root and magnesium — can have calming effects.
Either way, I was actually looking forward to my bedtime routine.
Interestingly, I completely forgot to apply the Slumber Patch over the weekend due to a packed schedule. Despite this, I still managed to sleep quite well.
It seems the patch had helped establish a healthier sleep rhythm that didn't collapse the minute I skipped a night. No afternoon naps were needed to catch up on sleep, which was a big win for someone who used to nap excessively to recover from poor nightly rest.
Entering the third week, I was genuinely curious to see if the benefits would persist. Despite feeling confident enough to go without it, I stuck with the Slumber Patch for the sake of continuity in this experiment.
The results? Still impressive. My sleep was consistently solid, and I found myself naturally waking up early, sometimes even before my alarm went off.
Here’s the kicker: I started waking up at 6 AM — an hour earlier than usual — to start a meditation course. Amazingly, I did this without the typical grogginess or the urge to hit the snooze button multiple times. Plus, I managed to meditate for half an hour every morning without dozing off, which is a huge win for me.
Absolutely, yes! The Slumber Patch has been a game-changer for me. I love that its effects seem to build a lasting foundation for better sleep, even when not used every night. Plus, the natural ingredients provide peace of mind that I’m not harming my body with chemicals.
Since completing my three-week trial, I’ve used the Slumber Patch intermittently, particularly on nights when I think I might struggle to nod off. Every time, it delivers — helping me drift off faster and wake up feeling refreshed.
So far, I prefer it to oral sleep supplements. Oral melatonin — both in doses of 2mg and 5mg — help me sleep, but often leave me groggy. The Slumber Patch, in contrast, doesn’t seem to make me anxious. It also has the benefit of helping me calm down before sleep, which melatonin doesn’t seem to help with on its own.
If you're struggling with sleep, the Slumber Patch is definitely worth a try. It’s helped me turn the page on my sleep issues, and it might just do the same for you.
